Great question! The judging table will be at your grill site! Each team that is competing in the 2020 "Grill-in-Place" BBQ in Red Shoes will be required to set up a space for 3 judges to score your entries. This area must include:
Feel free to decorate your judges tent! You can add "Welcome" signs, red shoe spirit decor, and more.
Yes! Your team pack will include:
We will not provide any tents, tables, cleaning supplies, trash cans, chairs, bottled water, or hand sanitizer.
We follow KCBS rules (mostly) but we are not a sanctioned event. Since 2020 will be a special circumstances event, teams will only receive scores from 3 judges.
Each judge will rate your chicken and pork ribs in three categories on a scale of 2-9:
The weighting factors for the point system are as follows:
As you can see by the weighting factors, taste is the most important, followed by tenderness, then appearance. But don't be sloppy! Appearance scores can make or break you in the competition.
Master Grillers Team Chicken Entry
Judge 1 Apperance Score: 7 * 0.5600 = 3.92
Judge 1 Taste Score: 8 * 2.2972 = 18.3776
Judge 1 Tenderness Score: 9 * 1.1428 = 10.2853
Total score for Master Grillers Team Chicken Entry from Judge 1: 32.582
The judges do NOT collaborate on your scores! During a normal year, they wouldn't even know whose chicken/ribs they were tasting and would judge 6 different piece of chicken and 6 different ribs! This year, however, they will know which team they are judging but will maintain professionalism. Judges will submit their scores virtually or by phone and the contest organizers will calculate final results, including tie breaker calculations.
Nope! If you aren't competing, then just light up the grill whenever you'd like and grill whatever you'd like. Go nuts! Just follow all you local health and safety guidelines.
Of course! But we need you to sign up for them when registering on or before October 9th!
We want our normal spectators to: volunteer to judge, donate or participate in the silent auction, sign up to volunteer day of, or host a Backyard BBQ with the family! Any of these will be a huge help to the event and helping the House!
